Prince Edward helped raise morale in Lewes when he paid a visit to areas of the county town that were wrecked by floods last week.

He spoke to victims of the deluge, such as shopkeepers and homeowners, who lost possessions and will have to spend weeks clearing up the mess.

The Prince also talked to many members of the emergency services who worked so hard to help those in distress.

He was right to praise the spirit shown by the people in this town, which has always had a good sense of community.

Now everyone must get on with the back-breaking and sometimes boring task of restoring normality to Lewes.

People unaffected by the disaster, including many from outside Lewes, can help by giving generously to the special appeal for victims, which was set up by Mayor Jim Daly.
