Skipper Mike Imrie is convinced his Worthing side can challenge for Three South East honours.

The scrum half had a try disallowed as his side knocked Tunbridge Wells off top spot by drawing 8-8 at Roundstone Lane.

Imrie admitted: "I was very proud of the lads and the effort they put in. We could have won, but we were weak in the scrums and failed to build any kind of platform. We need to build on our set pieces."

Wells led through a Kit Claughton penalty and Richard Sharples try but Terry Butler put the hosts right back in it when he rounded off slick move on half-time.

Stuart McLachlan levelled with a 53rd minute penalty and both sides had chances after that.

Charlton Park take over at the top but they trailed 15-0 to Lewes before pinching an 18-15 verdict.

It was another hammerblow for the struggling Sussex side, who were given a great start by a try, conversion and penalty by Martin Lovell.

Scrum half Tim Hemsley then darted over from a quick tap penalty, but Lewes were eventually sunk by two late penalties.

East Grinstead lost 6-5 in a niggly tussle at home to Cranbrook. Ray Hennessy scored a try and Ricky Lake was inches from winning it with a late penalty.

Brighton host Worthing next Saturday looking to bounce back from a 19-11 reverse at Sidcup.

Geraint Jones' try gave Brighton a slender first half lead. Paul Charlton kicked two penalties and skipper Gary Henderson said: "The forwards did particularly well."
