Chris Adams will give up the captaincy if he can't turn around Sussex's fortunes next season.

But he is convinced the county will drastically improve on this season's disappointing performances which saw them finish bottom in both the Championship and National League first division.

He said: "In a year's time if we have just had a similar season to the one we had this year then I will not be captain, it's as simple as that.

"To be honest it has crossed my mind since the end of the season as to whether I should carry on. I'm a good player and I might be an even better one without the pressures and stresses of captaincy.

"But one of the main reasons I came to Sussex in the first place was because I thought I was good enough to lead a successful side and I still believe that, now is not the right time to change things.

"I'm convinced things will be a lot different next year. For starters we will be in two easier divisions, this year has been as tough as it could get although I accept that the performances, especially in the last six weeks or so, were way below what is acceptable at this club."

Adams has turned down the offer of a lucrative contract to play for Orange Free State in South Africa this winter so he can concentrate on getting things right at the County Ground.

His main priority is to help find a replacement for Michael Bevan, who is taking next season off to rest, and recruit a top order, experienced batsman from the domestic ranks.

Adams will also be organising pre-season preparations in the absence of Peter Moores who will be coaching the England A team on their winter tour of West Indies from January until March.

"We all know the areas where we need strengthening and, fingers crossed, we should have some good news to announce in the next few weeks," added Adams.
