Howard Johnson, the first-ever MP for Brighton Kemp Town, has died, aged 89.

Although he quit the seat more than 40 years ago, he never lost touch with Kemp Town and its people.

Mr Johnson was elected in 1950 when the Kemp Town seat was formed and quickly proved to be a good constituency MP.

He held on to the seat at the 1955 general election but stood down in 1959 to be replaced by David James.

Kemp Town appeared to be a safe Conservative seat. This was partly through his personal vote, as was proved in 1964 when it became the first Sussex seat to go Labour.

Mr Johnson was equally celebrated in Brighton as a flamboyant lawyer.

He eventually became one of the few former Tory MPs to join the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament.
