Inventor Monty Waight has designed an eco-friendly toilet which he believes will revolutionise the way we spend a penny.

He was so concerned about the amount of precious water supplies wasted with every flush he created a loo that does not use any at all.

Monty, 56, of Fort Road, Newhaven, reckons his invention will set the ultimate standard in comfort and flush traditional notions about going to the toilet down the pan.

The retired design and technology teacher, who also invented a chewing gum carrier and disposer to cut down on the sticky problem on the streets, spent three years dreaming up and building his loo design.

He had the brainwave during the droughts of the early Nineties.

He said: "I remember seeing reports showing we were drawing down so far for water that sea water had started polluting supplies.

"I just thought it was perfectly ludicrous we use about 6.5 litres every time we flush the toilet. It is a total waste.

"If people on average wee five or six times a day, about 30 litres of water is being wasted every day per person. With my system you don't need any water at all to flush."

His hand-held loo takes liquid directly to the waste pipe behind the toilet, eliminating the need to flush.

Monty has met experts from Sussex University who suggested his creation could also be modified for bed-bound and elderly people.

He said: "It could have big implications for healthcare and avoid the need for bedpans and bottles. It could change the act of going to the toilet for men and women."

Monty says the toilet could prove invaluable in times of drought when people are urged not to flush frequently.

Monty has patented his creation in Britain and put in an application to patent it in America.
