With unemployment still over the national average and 50 per cent of families on benefit in some areas, it's a shame Andy Cunningham, the talent behind the great Bodger and Badger, complains about the possibility of Brighton and Hove's city bid enticing more money down here (Opinion, July 21).

We've said a thousand times the city bid is nothing to do with making Brighton and Hove bigger, just richer and better, with the prosperity being shared around, starting with the poor.

Those on low wages need the investment in better paid, more secure jobs, not to mention the opportunities new money will afford to expanding companies. We do not want to sprawl over the Downs and we cannot build over the sea.

The aim of the bid is to raise our profile, boast about the talented people such as Andy who live here and encourage business.

Brighton can't swallow Hove - it's a physical impossibility. There'll always be Hove, and a good job too.
