I recently attended Brighton and Hove Council's consultation on the planning brief for the Brighton Station site and was totally unimpressed.

The council representative I spoke to made it pretty clear we were being presented with a fait accompli. Although comments were invited, the whole thing was to be adopted as planning policy anyway. Minor alterations might be considered.

Apparently this was in part because it had already carried out a major community consultation in October last year. The result of this was an overwhelming rejection of a superstore, yet what do we find in the planning brief? A superstore!

What is the point of these consultations, other than as a PR scam?
