A work colleague of mine was knocked over by a cyclist as she alighted from a bus on her way to work. She fell into the road in front of the bus, bruising her leg and arm. She limped into the office where the full extent of her injuries became apparent.

I telephoned the police immediately, to be told they would not take any action unless the incident involved a motorised vehicle.

She was in a great deal of pain and X-rays revealed several broken bones in the foot. Imagine how much worse this could have been if it had been a child or much older person.

Cyclists seem to be above the law, riding on roads, pavements and through red traffic lights. How many cyclists have insurance?
