East Sussex County Council must make up its mind quickly about what to do over the vexed question of waste disposal.

So what did the ruling cabinet do when it met at Lewes?

It decided to set up a forum to find a solution to ways of dealing with rubbish.

Time is running out because landfill sites are getting full and the Government may not extend indefinitely its offer to pay millions towards waste disposal.

We've had all the argument for and against various sites for incinerators and tips. We've already had one postponement seven months ago.

The last thing anyone needs is a talking shop that will never resolve all the sincerely-held but widely-differing views about waste.

Decisions must be taken although they will be unpopular. Even if recycling is increased dramatically, there will still be rubbish to dump or burn.

There have got to be sites near the main centres of population to deal with this waste. Officers have suggested Newhaven for an incinerator.

No one has come up with a better site in the western part of East Sussex, so Newhaven it must be. The waste has to go somewhere. Why not make the decision now?

Wonders of work Brighton seafront is a mass of scaffolding, especially the area around the Aquarium roundabout.

There's work going on at the Royal Albion Hotel, The Old Ship Hotel, a new block of flats, the Escape night club and the Aquarium Terraces.

What is doubly encouraging about this work is that much of it is at the eastern end of the main seafront. This area has suffered from a lack of investment over the years.

With more schemes planned such as renovating the old ABC building in East Street, Brighton is well on its way to extending its lead as the best resort in Britain.

A brief stroll You've heard about the Long Man of Wilmington. Well now there's the Land Girl of Saddlescombe.

She's been created by art student Chris Cook on a downland field near the Devil's Dyke to look as if she's striding across the fields.

Sadly, the Land Girl won't last for centuries like the Long Man as the National Trust will plough the field later this summer.

But while she lasts, she's like Chris, her creator; a woman who can't fail to be noticed.
