Horsham Council is calling on Environment Secretary John Prescott to visit the town to see the impact house-building targets would have on the area.

It is calling for the figure to be substantially reduced and says the lack of brownfield sites should have been considered Horsham council welcomed the news that SERPLAN, which represents local government bodies in the South-East, had rejected the Secretary of State's "excessive" house-building targets.

He said: "The council wholeheartedly supports the view that the capacity of West Sussex in general, and Horsham district in particular, to absorb new house building should be based on environmental and infrastructure constraints and the relative lack of brownfield sites."

The spokesman said the council e-mailed the Minister to seek confirmation the final allocation to West Sussex, and to Horsham, would reflect the availability of brownfield sites. It was still waiting for a reply.

In the next few weeks more than 50,000 homes in Horsham will be sent a leaflet with details of the council's alternative proposals.
