Graham Chainey highlights how some 60,000 different chemicals, many suspected or actually proved to be injurious to human health, are used in carpets, furnishings, clothes, toilet paper, paint and packaging (Opinion, June 27).

Particularly scandalous is the fact all these chemicals will have been tested on animals and released on to the market with the assurance such tests have proved them to be completely safe.

Humans may be able to withstand adverse effects caused by individual chemicals, but nobody can predict the cumulative effect caused by the combination of substances we are unwittingly subjected to every day.
