The claims by whingeing motorists such as Andrew Dandridge (Opinion, June 20) are false.

It is especially ludicrous a resident of Station Road, Bishopstone, alleges no alternatives to cars. A few yards south there are trains every half-hour and a few yards north there are buses to Brighton and Eastbourne every 15 minutes (three an hour even on Sundays).

Cycling costs virtually nothing.

Half of all car journeys are two miles or less, well within walking distance.

Reputable transport economists such as John Whitelegg calculate car and lorry use are three-quarters subsidised by the community and congestion costs are £16 billion a year.

Motorists are scroungers. The public has demanded national traffic reduction. Labour's support is collapsing because it went soft on car culture.

The car is dead. Long live the numerous alternatives.
