Chris Adams today hailed Sussex's first Championship win of the season as their best display since he took over as captain.

The county moved off the bottom of the second division after a crushing ten-wicket win over Glamorgan.

"I can't really remember a better all-round performance from the side during my time in charge," said Adams.

"We have obviously won lots of games but often in conditions which have dictated the result a lot, but this was a flat pitch and we performed brilliantly.

"I don't know what pleased me more, the team making lots of runs after a lean spell or taking 20 wickets on what was a very good batting track.

"The belief in the side is slowly coming back and confidence is now where we want it to be. I'm so pleased for the guys that they have got the result they wanted in this game because they have worked so hard in the last few weeks."

Meanwhile, Adams has praised his players for their support during some of the most difficult weeks of his career. Adams was reported to Lord's after an angry exchange with umpire David Constant and last Tuesday fined £500 for pushing Danny Law during a one-day match with Essex.

"The pressure of the last few weeks has been immense. It all started with the quarter-final of the Benson and Hedges Cup which we lost and I admit it has been hard for me to maintain total concentration," he said. "But the players and our coach Peter Moores have been terrific. They have given me unbelievable support through all of this and their attitude has been fantastic.

"The last two to three weeks has been very unpleasant, but I hope I have learned from what has happened and I will be doing my best to make sure it doesn't happen again."

Adams will make sure they build on this victory when Middlesex visit Cricketfield Road for the Horsham festival on Wednesday.

"We are in the middle of a very intense spell of cricket and, now we have got our first win, it's important that we stay focussed and build on it against Middlesex," he said.

"We were A1 in all departments in this game and what pleased me most that we learned from what had happened to us against Warwickshire and Worcestershire and did exactly the same to Glamorgan so the signs are very promising."

Sussex are likely to be unchanged.
