Jason Lewry rediscovered his ability to prise out top batsmen and put Sussex in charge of their Championship match against Glamorgan.

Sussex's left-armer removed Australian Matthew Elliott, Steve James and captain Matthew Maynard as he returned season's best bowling figures at Hove yesterday.

Lewry finished with 4-40 as Glamorgan were bowled out for 185 and by the close Sussex had reached 62 without loss in reply.

Elliott was caught in the slips and James trapped leg before but Lewry reserved his best for Maynard who was bowled by a yorker-length delivery which swung late.

Lewry said: "I like to target players in the opposition who I would like to get out and I have to admit they were the three.

"I was especially pleased to get Maynard because he has been in great nick and I knew it would need a really good ball to get him out. It was a good length, swung late and luckily got through."

Lewry had taken just two wickets before yesterday and admitted he has struggled for early season rhythm.

He added: "Pre-season was badly affected by the rain and when we got going I would bowl one spell and feel fine but then it could be another four days before I bowled again and suddenly I felt out of nick.

"Hopefully now I have found a bit of rhythm and I can keep hold of it until the end of the season. I bowled pretty well in the last couple of games but this time things went my way."

Meanwhile Dutchman Bas Zuiderent faces at least two weeks out after injuring himself in training on Tuesday.

Zuiderent suffered ankle ligament damage in an accidental fall during practice and will definitely miss next week's second XI game at Hampshire's new ground near Southampton.

Coach Peter Moores said: "It's an old injury but hopefully Bas will respond to treatment and be back soon.

"It's a shame it's happened now because he has been playing well in the seconds."
