I have never heard such a case of sour grapes as David Biesterfield whinging about the lottery grant to restore the West Pier (Argus, May 26). It is obvious to most people the two piers will offer completely different styles and attractions, so it is unlikely his profits will be greatly affected.
The two piers are a historic feature of Brighton and the local people will not accept Noble's attempts to stifle the re-emergence of the West Pier, as indicated by the considerable opposition to their plan to rename the Palace Pier "Brighton Pier". The matter of flagrantly flouting Brighton and Hove Council's planning rules should also not be forgotten. Personally, I have absolutely no objection to the money I have donated to the Lottery Fund being used to restore the West Pier.
If Mr Biesterfield is so worried about the prospect of a little competition, perhaps he should make way for a businessman who enjoys a challenge.
