DRAMA: Forest Row Dramatic Society's autumn production, Daisy Pulls It Off, has scooped two awards at the Brighton and Hove Festival. The Society were awarded second place for the play itself and Sally Hannam (who played Trixie Martin), won the prize for best actress.

WALKERS: If you are a walker and regularly use footpaths in the local area, you may be interested to know you can consult the Footpath Definitive Map and Statement at the Parish Office, which is open Tuesdays to Fridays, between 10am-3pm. Footpaths can easily become under-used or forgotten and for this reason a regularly updated map is of great use to land-owners and walkers.

ART: Classes for children aged between six and 12 are held on Saturday mornings between 9.30-11am. Drawing brings the group together using a variety of materials, followed by a story to create an imaginative context. The children then paint images or moods in swirling watercolours, the emphasis being on process not product, with lots of joyful play and gentle guidance.

CONCERT: Entertainment for Ecuador promises to be a feast of local musical and drama talent, the purpose of which is to raise money to help student Charlotte Rockall to embark upon a world challenge expedition to one of the poorest regions of South America.

While in Ecuador Charlotte, together with fellow students and teachers, hopes to benefit the community of Tandyapa by teaching English in local schools, working with homeless street children and assisting in the renovation of communal buildings.

The Entertainment for Ecuador concert will take place on Saturday at St George's Church, East Worthing, at 7pm. Tickets will be available on the door priced £3 (children under 12 free) and refreshments will be served during the interval.

STAMP COLLECTORS: Stamp clubs will be represented at the Hobbies and Leisure Exhibition 2000 at the Assembly Hall on Saturday, March 4, 10am-4pm. Anyone interested in any form

of stamp-collecting will be welcomed at the Philatelic Stand.

At the meeting of the Worthing Philatelic Society, the first half of the evening was given over to Don Winkworth who gave a most interesting display of the stamps and history of Belgium. The second half was given over to the annual competitions which were judged by Peter Phipps.

The Thematic Cup was won by David Sessons with an entry on Henry Hechler, and Pamela Puttick was second with a display entitled Crown Jewels. The Philately Cup was won by Brian Doherty with his entry on the 2d Blues used in Constantinople with Eddie Lawrence second with his showing of Penny Reds.

At the meeting of the Worthing Society of Postal Historians, Lewis Warren gave a most interesting talk and display on the Postal Rates of Canada during the reign of Queen Victoria.

POLICE/COMMUNITY FORUM: At the last meeting a talk was given by Dale Foden, Eastbourne Highways Manager, followed by discussion. Requests were made for a 20mph speed limit in the town and other traffic calming measures, barriers at Devonshire Place, zebra crossings at Memorial Square and Gildredge Road and a solution to the problem of Mark Lane.

Inspector Richards stated that recent figures confirmed Eastbourne as one of the safest places to live. The problems of 'boy racers' and anti-social behaviour were being actively tackled by the police.

CHURCH NEWS: The new Archbishop of Westminster, Cormac Murphy O'Connor, has been a frequent visitor to Eastbourne, which is part of his former diocese of Arundel and Brighton. He recently ordained to the priesthood Father Christopher Bergin of Prideaux Road at the Church of Our Lady of Ransom.

BARGAINS: The YWCA is holding an Attic Attack sale for the charity People Matter (50 per cent proceeds to vendors, 50 per cent to the charity) on Saturday. Viewing is from 10am to noon and the auction is at 2pm. Telephone 01323 431289 for details.

ANNUAL MEETING: Hamsey, Cooksbridge and East Chiltington Conservative branch held their AGM at the Malthouse, Cooksbridge last week. Lord Monk Bretton chaired the meeting, and was re-elected president and branch chairman. Janet Latham was re-elected secretary and James Latham treasurer. Committee members were re-elected en-bloc. County councillor Simon Sinnatt, who is also the Conservative prospective parliamentary candidate for Lewes, was the guest speaker.

NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH: Last month saw several incidents concerning vehicles in our area. A white Ford Transit was stolen from Downsview Cottages, Cooksbridge, a Peugeot 106 parked in the same area had its lock forced and a CD player and CDs stolen. A Honda Civic parked in Offham had a window broken and a CD player stolen.

IMPROVEMENTS: North Whitehawk is a hive of activity at present. Work has started on the extension to the Social Centre, and on the re-cladding of Swallow Court. Work will also be starting shortly on the new playground at the bottom of Coolham Drive.

FRIENDS: The Friends of Whitehawk Hill have had to make one or two changes to their summer programme. If you are planning to attend any of the events, it would be a good idea to check first by ringing 6208l5 or 682847.
