TV astronomer Patrick Moore raised his glass and cut the first sod at the start of building work on a new health centre for his home town.

The project at Selsey, near Chichester, was designed by West Sussex Health Authority to meet the growing needs of the expanding seaside town. The health centre in School Lane will replace the existing one in St Peter's Crescent.

Mr Moore, of West Street, Selsey, is host of the BBC's longest-running programme, The Sky At Night. Keith Stevens, regeneration manager for Selsey, said: "The new health centre is badly needed, particularly as 40 per cent of our population is aged over 60."
