Teenagers watched in horror as a fellow pupil collided with a car as she walked home from school.
The 13-year-old pupil from Hailsham Community College was crossing Vicarage Road, Hailsham, with her friends when the accident happened at 3.30pm yesterday. She was taken to Eastbourne District Hospital where she was treated for head injuries.
A female from the Hailsham area was driving the Ford Escort involved in the collision but was released without charge after police questioning. PC Alan Fleetwood of Polegate Traffic police said an investigation was taking place.
PC Fleetwood said: "She was in the process of crossing Vicarage Road with a number of friends. There is a pathway which is used as a shortcut from the school to the main estate and the pupils had come from this onto the main road where the accident happened. The girl is still in hospital and her condition is being monitored."
