Guide Association, Brighton West Peggy Pierce 01273 500622 COFFEE MORNING: Patcham Trefoil Guild held a coffee morning to raise funds for the Martlets Hospice. A total of over £200 was raised. All of the Sussex East Trefoil Guilds are holding money-raising events this year to help to support their local hospices.

THE HILL DISTRICT: Some 120 girls will be going to see Alice in Wonderland, the Gardner Arts Centre's Christmas pantomime.

The Westdene Brownies held a Bring and Buy sale at their Westdene headquarters and raised £49 for the Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society. This money will be used to sponsor a dolphin and a whale for one year. On January 15 several Brownie packs will be involved in planting trees for the environment at Hollingbury Hill.

PATCHAM DISTRICT: A camp was held at Uckfield for Guides aged 13 and over, and more events aimed at girls of this age group are being planned.

Three Baden Powell Awards, the highest award a girl can achieve in the Guide section, have been gained. Very many congratulations to the girls concerned.

Fund-raising continues to help to pay for the new equipment store that the district is planning to build. The next event will be a Talent Show which is being held on December 11.

Katherine Chapman, formerly a Guide Leader from Patcham, has now returned from a four-month working trip to Portland, Oregon, U.S. She is now in Worthing and we hope that she will be able to resume her Guiding.

PRESTON PARK DISTRICT: Two Baden Powell Awards have been gained by girls in this district. Again well done both of you! One of the awards was presented at a church service and the other up a fire engine ladder at Brighton Fire Station.

Guider Helen Emmerson has been commended by the testers for her file which was part of the work undertaken to gain her Camper's Licence, which enables her to take charge of Guide Camps. Helen is a local P.E. Teacher.

CYCLISTS: There could be a cycle track between Longridge Avenue and the Palace Pier if plans submitted to Brighton and Hove Council are approved.

The public were asked to fill in a questionnaire and give their suggestions at a display in the White Horse Restaurant over the weekend.

The scheme is part of the 8,000-mile National Cycle Network of which the first stage, 3,500 miles, will be opened early in the millennium year.

CHRISTMAS CAROLS: Saltdean School Choir will be singing in the Library on December 10 at 11am.

SALTDEAN CINDERELLA: An audience participation pantomime will be performed by the Cherokee Country Players at the Community Centre on Sunday, December 17

SCOUTS: Saltdean Scout Group held a 50th anniversary celebration and get-together at the Scout Hut in Longridge Avenue last Sunday and three founder members attended, Mr R. Richardson, Mr J. Drake and Penny Walker (Beavers) as well as over 50 others.

The Scouts urgently need a Group Leader. There were displays and photographs of the groups' past and present achievements and a mouth-watering feast of cakes and snacks.

SHEEPCOTE VALLEY: Anyone who has visited Sheepcote Valley recently will have seen some of the improvements made by the Friends of Sheepcote Valley, including a seat near the racetrack, looking down on the valley. The following future activities are planned:

December 11: Natural Christmas Decorations; January 15: Construct Picnic Table; February 19: Tree Planting; March 18: Construct Picnic Table No. 2.

Anyone interested should meet at 10.30am near the Pavilion in East Brighton Park.

NEW DEAL: There was a meeting at the Youth Centre on November 19 in connection with the New Deal for Communities, when people had the opportunity to hear some of the suggestions made so far.

Nothing definite has been decided yet, and there will be further meetings in January when residents will have the chance to give their opinions as to how they want the money spent.

LADIES' AFTERNOON: Women at a loose end on Thursday afternoons are invited to Downs Baptist Church Ladies' Afternoon with a variety of interesting speakers from 2.15pm in the Parish Room, Holy Cross Church.

FAYRES: Father Christmas will be busy tomorrow. He will be at Woodingdean Methodist Church Christmas Fayre from 10am at Woodingdean Community Centre.

Kipling Lions Pre-school Christmas Fayre will have Father Christmas at Southern Aurora Hut from 11am-2pm.

And the Church of the Holy Cross has also invited the White Rabbit from Alice in Wonderland at the Gardner Centre to their Christmas Fayre.

FAYRE: A Christmas Fayre is taking place at Norman Latham House, 283 Old Shoreham Road, Southwick, tomorrow at 2.20pm in aid of the Entertainment Fund.

Cycling: Last Saturday the Brighton Mitre Cycling club celebrated their 105 years' history at St Catherine's Lodge Hotel, Kingsway, with a magnificent dinner.

The main recipients of trophies were Tristian Court, Jay Chisnal, Peter Evison and Brian James, the Veterans Best All Rounder.

The club is going into the next millennium with a strong group of riders and will be challenging for more top honours.

ANNUAL MEETING: The Hangleton and Knoll Project are holding their AGM on Tuesday at 7.30pm at St Richard's Church and Community Centre, Egmont Road.

CAMERAS: The CCTV cameras at the corner of Dorset Gardens and Rock Gardens are now in operation. Hopefully they will deter some of the crime in the St James' Street and Upper St James' street area.

St George's Church: The parishioners of St George's Church have returned home after a long renovation period of turning the old crypt into a community centre.

Although not completely finished, a lot of the work has been completed. The community centre will open in early part of 2000.

Tomorrow they are holding their Christmas market, l0am-2pm at St Anne's hall Kemp Town.

They hold an Advent Carol Concert at St George's on Sunday at 6pm.
