LEWES maintained top spot in hockey's National League division one after producing a sparkling display to beat Brooklands 7-2.

Alistair Boyse was the star of the show after scoring a hat-trick, but manager Peter Boyse was delighted about the all-round performance of his side.

Boyse said: "We were brilliant and we would have beaten anybody on that performance.

"We had a couple of 8-2 wins earlier in the season against who weren't particularly good, but Brooklands were a good side."

Alistair Boyse put Lewes ahead midway through the first half, but Brooklands levelled just before the interval with their first attack of the half.

In the second period, Lewes started turning their superiority into goals with Belgium under-21 international Ed Cabay restoring the lead after Luke Hurle touched on an excellent through ball from Jeremy Boyse.

Left back Phil Walker made it 3-1 with his sixth goal of the campaign and the floodgates then opened with Cabay scoring a second, Alistair Boyse going on to score twice more and brother Jeremy hit the seventh after the visitors had grabbed a second consolation.

Lewes: Dale; Hill, Heslop, J. Boyse, Walker; Hawes, Owen, Poulsen; Hurle, A. Boyse, Cabay. Subs: Dupont, Standing, Miller, Collins. Man-of-the-match: Alistair Boyse.

EAST GRINSTEAD twice came from behind to draw 2-2 away to Chelmsford.

The hosts applied the initial pressure and were awarded two short corners, the first being well-saved by Andy Spight and the rebound was cleared off the line by Henry Lacey.

Grinstead then responded with Richard Leman's flick from a short corner being well saved and Dominic Male miss-hit a good opportunity after a fine run by Mahmood Bhatti.

After half time Grinstead were put under enormous pressure and they eventually fell behind after 50 minutes when Chelmsford won a penalty flick which Spight had no chance of saving.

Two minutes later, Grinstead were level when Dominic Male dispatched a short corner into the top of the net.

A poor clearance from the visitors allowed Chelmsford to regain the lead, but Grinstead fought back to win another short corner from which Male equalised again.

It was their short corner routine which kept East Grinstead in the game. They converted two out of four, a ratio not achieved for a long time.
