Saltdean Doug Streeter 01273 300283 ROTTINGDEAN PRESERVATION SOCIETY: The annual meeting was held at the Whiteway Centre under the chairmanship of John Cooper.

The treasurer, Mike Browning, explained the financial position of the Society. He noted that the expenditure on the renovation of the Mill had exceeded estimations because as the work progressed, further problems were uncovered and £52,000 is the likely cost to date. Some investments of the society had, with approval, been sold to cover the outlay.

The question of a lottery grant was being pursued, but it would appear that if any grant were made it would be granted only on the proviso that the mill was open to the public. This was not possible as access above ground level is only by builder's ladder, unsuitable for public use and an outside stairway would have to be built which would contravene the regulations.

The cap of the mill needs to be repaired and the provisional estimate for this is £7000.

It should be noted that the owners of the mill, Brighton and Hove Council, do not make a grant towards the upkeep or the restoration of the mill and were it not for the Preservation Society the mill would have collapsed by now and a famous Sussex landmark destroyed.

It is proposed to restore the old Washouse in Golden Square at a cost of £2,000 and an auction of paintings is planned at the Grange Art Gallery in December.

Southern Aurora: Last Sunday evening I had the pleasure of attending Southern Aurora's annual awards ceremony following the bands success this season.

Over 70 members and staff, mostly from Woodingdean, travelled all over the country competing in the Premier League for the first time this year.

The dedicated group that formed the band four years ago, are continuing to do a wonderful job in the village giving a large group of youngsters an interest on three days of the week.

BABY-SITTING: Do you have a baby or young children that need a sitter when you want to go out? Then you may be interested in Woodingdean's Baby Sitting Group. You sit for others and earn points to have your own children looked after when you need it.
