The Argus can today reveal that Chris, 43, is the man whose palm features in a new referendum campaign.

Brighton and Hove Council launched a search for the supporter whose outstretched arm is used in publicity material urging people to vote on plans for a new stadium at Falmer.

Chris was captured by an Argus photographer cheering on the Seagulls during their May 1997 match at Hereford.

The game saw the team escape relegation from the Football League with a 1-1 draw before a capacity crowd of 8,000.

But ironically Chris will be unable to vote in the referendum - he lives in Eastbourne.

The picture was featured in the Argus on Thursday and Chris contacted us soon afterwards.

The computer manager, of Lowther Close, has followed the club since moving to Sussex from London ten years ago.

Chris, his wife Joy and daughters Louisa, 19, and 17-year-old Jessica, are all season ticket holders.

He said: "The kids spotted me in the paper and think it is a great laugh. It is my one claim to fame in life."

Remembering the day the photo was taken, he added: "It was such a relief when we got the result. People were in floods of tears at the end."

Although Chris, who works at Eastbourne District General Hospital, can't vote, council chiefs hope he will now attend publicity events. Chris said: "I will be happy to do what I can to help." The referendum campaign will be launched on April 6.

Requests for postal or proxy votes must be returned to the council by April 20. For further details, call the election hotline on 01273 291999.
