Doctors were last night fighting to save the life of a man who could hold vital information on the killing of a 30-year-old Brighton woman.

Angela Talman was found in a council basement bedsit in College Terrace, Kemp Town, on Friday night.

A post mortem examination by Home Office pathologist Vesna Djurovic, from Guy's Hospital, London, revealed Ms Talman had died from severe head injuries.

Aman aged about 40 was found lying unconscious nearby suffering from similar injuries.

He was taken to the intensive care unit at Brighton's Royal Sussex County Hospital, where his condition yesterday was critical.

Detectives later arrested two Brighton men in their twenties.

Officers got into the flat, part of a four-storey terraced house, through a window at 9.35pm after neighbours heard screaming.

College Terrace was sealed off by police as forensic experts conducted a fingertip search of the scene.

An incident room was set up at Brighton's John Street police station and a team of 15 detectives yesterday quizzed neighbours.

Det Chief Insp George Smith, who is leading the inquiry, said: "This is an extremely tragic incident."
