ALL sorts of celebrations are planned for Brighton and Hove to mark the millennium, including a three-day seafront spectacular.

But Tory councillor John Sheldon has come up with a good idea for a permanent reminder of the millennium. At the entrance to Brighton on the A23 are the Pylons, two imposing stone columns erected in 1928 to mark the extension of the borough's boundaries. Since the widening of the A23 to a dual carriageway, one of the Pylons has looked rather forlorn, being on the central reservation. The two Pylons badly need a third one to restore symmetry and this is what Coun Sheldon is suggesting. Two thirds of the cost of the original Pylons was provided by that benefactor of Brighton Sir Herbert Carden while the rest was raised by public subscription. Perhaps the Millennium Lottery Fund could take the place of Sir Herbert 70 years on.
