The cowardly act of these terrorists to try and undermine our society will fail miserably.

We, the British, have stood against worse enemies than this.

Hitler tried to subdue us and failed. The IRA tried and failed and al Qaida will fail, too.

Two men who I had little regard for, Ken Livingstone and Tony Blair, have both gone up in my estimation.

Ken Livingstone did for the words he spoke from Singapore after the explosions, saying that al Qaida goes for indiscriminate targets.

He was right - they don't care if they kill children, elderly people, office workers, Christians, Muslims, Jews, Hindus, or anyone else.

And Tony Blair was right, with his stirring speech about how terrorists will not change our way of life.

He spoke with an emotional conviction and sincerity I have not heard or detected in him before. It reminded me of Winston Churchill in the Forties and was a tremendous rallying call.

Well done to both men and well done to the emergency services and to London transport workers, as well as the public for their calmness in the face of adversity.
