How lovely to read about John Ovenden's singing career (Letters, August 1). John must have been thrilled to have been a Carroll Levis discovery because Levis's talent show was the forerunner of all the star-making shows today, such as X Factor and Fame Academy.

It was also fascinating to hear of John's appearances with two of the founding fathers of the theatre organ, Robinson Cleaver and Reginald Porter who, together with those other great organists, Sandy MacPherson and Brighton's Douglas Reeve, were responsible for making organ music popular.

Of most interest to me, however, was the revelation that John recorded My Thanks To You in an arrangement with Tony Back.

This song has been my favourite ever since I saw Steve Conway sing it at the Brighton Hippodrome in 1950. I wrote to The Argus about him (Letters, September 27, 2001) and put a snippet of My Thanks To You on my answer phone.

I would love to hear John's recording. Perhaps he could put it online or even re-issue it so I could go and buy a copy.
