Drinkers after a cold beer got more than they bargained for at a Sussex pub this weekend.

The Tavern on the Green in Crawley was transformed into an icy haven for those feeling the heat.

A solid ice bar complete with ice pint glasses and ice stools saw the pub providing the coldest pint in Britain.

As temperatures soared, owner Steve Monaghan had decided to cool things down.

He even hired Scandinavian beauties Angelina and Aisling to serve the beer at a chilly 3C (37.4F).

Mr Monaghan said: "Over the past number of weeks customers were complaining about the hot weather - they kept saying it's too hot to sit inside and it's too hot to sit outside.

"They even said the hot weather was affecting their beer.

"That's when it became serious. I made a comment in passing to a contact and the next thing I know I've a bunch of Danes measuring up my pub for a bar made from ice.

"I was proud to be serving the coldest pint in Britain this weekend."

The ice bar was designed and sculpted by Duncan Hamilton and built on site. It weighs four tonnes and was made from 4,000 litres of water.

The bar took more than four hours to build and each block took four hours to freeze before it could be sculpted.
