This year's open-air performances by The Groundlings Theatre Company can truly be said to be back by popular demand.

"Last year we handed out a survey to the audience", says director Richard Hurdle. "We asked them what they would most like to see in 2005 and gave them some possible titles. Much Ado About Nothing, Alice In Wonderland and A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum were the most popular."

Aside from providing theatre which is by the people, for the people, The Groundlings particularly enjoys performing at Borde Hill.

"The house is gorgeous when it's lit up at night and the audiences respond really well because of the lovely atmosphere in the garden." says Richard.

The three plays have very different styles. Much Ado is presented in a more traditional manner, Alice leans towards physical theatre and A Funny Thing is pure knock-about farce.

Richard, who directs all three shows and also plays Benedict in Much Ado has many favourites scenes.

"I love the gulling scene in Much Ado where Benedict is fooled by Don Pedro, Claudio and Leonato into thinking Beatrice is in love with him," he says. "The audience always enjoys it. Alice has fantastic costumes, especially the King and Queen of Hearts.

"A Funny Thing is a scream all the way through but there's a scene at the end with lots of running in and out of doors which is great fun. It took an entire day to block that scene but it was worth it."

Performing outdoors the company has to bring the entire theatre with them.

"We basically have the lawn and a power point provided and the rest we bring ourselves," says Richard. "It takes about a day to set up all the box offices, marquees, stage, lighting, sound, ushers and box office staff." The advantages of performing outside in beautiful surroundings far outweigh the gruelling preparation, though.

As Richard says: "The audience can enjoy a walk in the gardens, bring a picnic and a bottle of wine and then enjoy an evening of theatre with a wonderful atmosphere."
