Business leaders are urging the public to back plans to improve a notorious A27 bottleneck.

Eastbourne Chamber of Commerce wants businesses and individuals to register their support for the proposed new road bridge at Beddingham, between Lewes and Polegate.

The proposal is also being backed by the Brighton and Hove Business Forum.

The plan, part of a £19 million Government package to improve the road, is being opposed by the A27 Action Group. It says the new bridge will not solve congestion and will ruin an area of outstanding natural beauty.

The proposals also include new safety measures including 40mph speed limits and safety cameras on the approach to the Beddingham crossing.

A public inquiry into the scheme is due to begin on September 6.
