It is sad to read about home ownership becoming increasingly out of reach of more and more young people in the South-East (The Argus, August 29).
However, the Government hasn't exactly been active in trying to help these people to buy new homes.
Apart from being reluctant to double the council tax on second homes, it has also done nothing to discourage multiple home ownership by individuals, has refused to levy a tax on development land - thereby allowing residential property prices to soar - in addition to limiting shared ownership schemes to those already in social housing or on council house waiting lists.
If the Government had adopted just one of these measures, a lot more people would have been able to get on to the first rung of the property ladder.
