Drunken yobs and those who encourage binge and under-age drinking are the targets in a new blitz by Sussex Police.

Drunks will face on-the-spot fines and bars, clubs and even supermarkets which sell to drunks and the under-aged will have their licences revoked.

Chief Constable Ken Jones launched the four-month crackdown at force headquarters in Lewes yesterday and he did not mince his words: "The people of Sussex have had enough and so have I."

Earlier this year, he warned a major drive was in the pipeline and he slammed the "minority of selfish morons" who drink too much and cause half the street crime in Sussex.

He attacked clubs, pubs, shops, supermarkets and off- licences which sold alcohol irresponsibly and then expected society to clean up and foot the bills.

Mr Jones was criticised at the time by industry elements who said they paid local taxes and should not be expected to pay any more or be punished for what drinkers did.

But Mr Jones yesterday kept up his tough talking, saying: "Irresponsible elements within the drinks and entertainment industry are only interested in making a quick buck and see the rest of the community pick up the tab.

"The consequences of their greed are plain for all to see.

"The character of some of our towns, cities and villages changes at night.

"Binge drinking, drunken, boorish behaviour, vomit and litter on our streets, wasting the time of police, ambulance and hospital staff who have better things to do.

"Enough is enough. We are going to work with our partners across Sussex and will bear down on bars, clubs and supermarkets who are breaking the law.

"We will be actively looking to prosecute and make examples of those in the industry who fail to heed my words today."

He said his warning applied particularly to theme pubs and bars.
