England captain Clare Connor will miss her first tour in ten years because of a injury.

Connor, who led the women's Ashes success against Australia in the summer, ruled herself out of the November trip to India because of a long-term ankle problem.

The all-rounder from Hove, who also skippered Sussex to the national county title, believes she needs to rest the injury.

Connor, who led her country in the World Cup earlier this year, said: "I had a cortisone before the World Cup and it got me through the tournament and the Ashes series.

"But the ankle has flared up again and I wanted to break the cycle of cortisone, play, cortisone, play.

"I will feel lost because it is the first tour I have missed in ten years, but I want to get fully fit.

"I will do rehab and hopefully be raring to go when India come over here next summer.

"The break will also give me time to get to grips with being back as a teacher at Brighton College. There is plenty to sort out."

Charlotte Edwards will be acting captain for the tour to the sub continent.

The tour marks the return of Caroline Atkins, from Burgess Hill, after a three-year absence.

Atkins figured in a world record partnership of 200 against India but was discarded following a loss of form.

Connor said: "I am delighted for Caroline. She has earned it with her dedication."

Sussex player Atkins, 24, a member of the MCC Young Players staff at Lord's, is delighted.

She said: "I never gave up hope. It is ironic my recall should be against India. My family told me I must be a sub-continent expert."
