The annual football match between Labour MPs and Westminster lobby journalists got off to a late start yesterday.

The politicos, including such faces as Gordon Brown's right-hand man Ed Balls and former Hove MP Ivor Caplin, stood about for more than half an hour waiting for their kit man to turn up.

They were reminded by watching journalists that even hospital waits do not take as long these days.

As it turned out, the cause of the problem was a gift to the media wags as the MPs' captain, Clive Betts, had been held up by a train from his Sheffield constituency running 40 minutes late.
