The proposed introduction of parking fees in Stanmer Park, one of Brighton's most popular parks, is going to have a big effect on local people (The Argus, September 21).

Once again, Brighton and Hove City Council is using a sledgehammer to crack a nut. Yes, a few people are thoughtless and park on the grass. This can easily be rectified by putting wooden poles around the grass, which would also maintain Stanmer Park as a free resource and preserve the view as you enter.

The article stated that frequent users of the park were consulted on the matter. How many people? Who were they? Why were no notices put up in the park inviting the general public's views?

Last year, I wrote a letter to The Argus about this matter, asking Gill Mitchell and the rest of the council why the public parking on the grass with their small family cars was considered, by them, to be more damaging than the large vehicles which park in all our parks and Victoria Gardens, with council permission, when various functions take place.

Of course, I did not get one reply. However, when someone suggests parking charges, the council gives it its full attention. Is nowhere going to be safe from this council's money-grabbing parking-fee mania?

Come on people of Brighton, especially those of you from Moulsecoomb and Coldean, speak up. You are the ones who have the most to lose.
