Jimmy Carr, urbane and caustic host of 8 Out Of 10 Cats, prince of the epigrammatic one-liner and architect of altogether new boundaries of questionable taste is back in town.

Although Jimmy's profile is more as a television personality he started out and continues to be a talented stand up comedian.

His unique brand of humour is based on the comments he makes on life's taboos.

A prolific gag merchant, Carr has built up a rich pool of razor-sharp and supremely dry one-liners, which he tells with an enjoyably measured air of snobbish superiority.

It's a mix of neatly-constructed puns and indignant observations, the best of them reinforcing his snide middle-class persona.

And the gags, which are surprisingly quickfire given the deliberate delivery, rarely fail to hit home.

His aloof character is not one an audience would instinctively warm to, and banter is by his own admission not his strong suit.

But he easily wins them over with the quality of the punchlines.

Not that he finds it particularly gruelling to pen his often-cruel one-liners, considering it a matter of discipline rather than the agony of sweating over a blank notebook.

"Writing stand-up just happens," he says.

"But you constantly have to be bothered to get up at 3am to write down half-formed ideas.

"For me, the writing process is an editing process. I write down everything that strikes me as funny in a big file on my computer, then come back to pick out from it what I think I can make work.

"It's not more analytical that that, otherwise the fun would go out of it."
