Same-sex couples will soon be able to tie the knot when civil partnership ceremonies become legal.

East Sussex County Council and West Sussex County Council's register offices yesterday announced plans to offer the service to gay and lesbian couples from December 5.

The first legal ceremonies will take place on December 21 after a 15-day notice period.

Brighton and Hove City Council had hoped to conduct some of the first ceremonies in England earlier this year.

Three couples intended to wed as the clock chimed midnight on December 21 but will have to wait another eight hours to fit in with the rules for heterosexual couples.

The Civil Partnership Bill means same-sex couples will have the same legal rights as heterosexual couples.
