On my way to work early one morning last week, I saw two police officers blithely cycle up the pavement in Bartholomews, opposite Brighton Town Hall.

If this road was one-way, they might have had just cause (even though they were obviously not in "hot pursuit").

That this stretch of road from East Street going west up to Market Street is two-way is one of the most weird arrangements we have in Brighton - so weird that these two police officers were even unaware of it.

But if officers choose to cycle on the pavement instead of the road, what chance have we got of them enforcing the Road Traffic Act to keep cyclists off it?
