Homeless charity Shelter has brought its Know Your Rights housing campaign for young people to Sussex.

More than 1,200 families and single people in Brighton and Hove were found to be homeless last year, many of them young people.

The Know Your Rights campaign is promoting the new web-based housing advice service.

The campaign visited Connexions Sussex, Queens Road, the University of Brighton Students' Union, the skatepark on Lewes Road and London Road, The Lanes, central Brighton and City College, Pelham Street.

The web site offers practical and legal advice on the full range of housing problems, from dealing with rogue landlords to targeted advice for students and care leavers and help with money matters such as rent deposits.

A key aim of the three-year Know Your Rights campaign is to stem rising homelessness among vulnerable 16 to 25-year-olds who are less inclined to seek advice from mainstream services.

Adam Sampson, Shelter director, said: "From students to care leavers, many young people are at risk of suffering in bad housing or even becoming homeless simply because they don't know their housing rights.

"Know Your Rights means that for the first time, young people will be able to access the full range of expert support so they can avoid being ripped off or losing their home altogether."
