I write in response to June Sullivan's letter about a golf ball striking her windscreen from a pitch-and-putt course.

In a letter published last year, I alluded to the bizarre antics of the council in putting up a "safety fence" around a Christmas tree in The Lanes while a genuine safety hazard of these pitch-and-putt courses is overlooked.

Any privately-owned course would be required to erect a fence by its insurance company because of a real fear of being sued - plus a realisation that golf balls and nearby traffic are inherently dangerous.

However, when the council eventually does realise what a genuine hazard this is, I expect it will close the course instead of erecting a safety fence on the basis of cost; and another amenity will be lost.

A golfer doesn't have to aim his ball at the road. There are well-known strokes, called slices and hooks, which will do the job.
