In response to Mrs Wendy Taylor (Letters, October 6), may I remind her the Fire Brigade was renamed many moons ago and is now known as the Fire and Rescue Service and I emphasise the word rescue.

From news coverage in The Argus, it would appear that the Fire Service responds to more "rescue" calls than it does actual fires be it to rescue a cat up a tree, a cow stuck in mud, little Jimmy with his head in a saucepan or an old lady locked in the lavatory.

the ground floor due to lift failure.

As a disabled person, she also had the right to expect an appropriate and sensitive response.

I have nothing but the highest regard for the Fire Service per se but, on this occasion, those who said they could not help because the service was on standby for the Labour Conference have drawn the image of the service into disrepute.

I sincerely hope that, should Mrs Taylor ever became disabled, she is able to immediately acquire ground-floor accommodation with disabled access.

Having achieved this, I hope no other human being makes such scathing remarks about her as she made in her letter about Suchi Chatterjee.
