Set up in 1987 to help promote knowledge of black history and culture, the annual Black History Month now incorporates up to 3,000 events around the country every October.

Among these is Re:Present, a one-day community event aimed at celebrating cultural diversity in Brighton and encompassing everything from film and art to photography and soul food, as well as workshops, dance and DJs.

The main emphasis, however, is on music, a wide and varied mix that encompasses every genre from gospel to Latin. Sometime Digitek member Buzz will be playing a hiphop/soul set, there'll be a live bhangra performance from 4x4 and also a funk revue from local band Son Of Sam.

The art component, meanwhile, will be made up of Catherine Lucktaylor and the team from Rarekind Graffiti Gallery, who'll be in charge of creating a live art piece, in which all are welcome to take part. They will also be exhibiting a nationally touring photography exhibition entitled From The Soho Road To The Punjab.

In addition, there will be performance poetry from Native Son, a screening of the film South Coast, documenting the local hip-hop scene, and DJs such as the celebrated Boy Channa.

To make sure you've got the energy to stay dancing through to the early hours, there will be soul food available courtesy of the one and only Momma Cherri, whose traditional Southern States staples have won over even Gordon Ramsay.

And finally, if the day's events inspire you to take up any featured activity, from DJing to carnival, there'll be a suitable workshop available to help you brush up your skills. Who knows, maybe next year you'll be seeing the event from the stage.
