When playwright Sara Clifford first moved to Lewes she was fascinated by the bonfire night celebrations, from the parade of Victorian firemen, Tudor ladies and Zulu warriors to the "No Popery" sign in the High Street.
"I wondered what the history of the celebrations were," she says, "and I wanted to understand just what exactly is it we are all celebrating with the bonfires, bells and fireworks?"
Set on the first ever Bonfire Night and directed by Maria Pattinson of Brighton-based Theatre And Beyond, Fires In The Fields is the dramatic result of her investigations.
By order of King James I, the country is preparing to light a string of fires as thanksgiving for the failure of the Gunpowder Plot.
In one Sussex household tension is mounting as two brothers struggle to conceal their conflicting beliefs and the celebrations reach a shocking climax.
