The Government's aim of making secondary school selection fairer with a banding system based on standard verbal tests, is a step in the right direction. It will do much to make comparisons more valid and to remove "ghetto schools".
In reality, educational selection is social selection based on children's ability. The Inner London Education Authority pioneered such a system - a pity it was abolished.
