With 40 years of acting behind her, Rosemary Leach can be forgiven for suggesting there is little more for her to learn.

Yet, after a highly successful career, spanning dozens of roles in television, film and radio, including a Best Actress nomination for the classic Cider With Rosie, she insists that "you learn something new every time you do a play you never stop learning about yourself."

This is even true, she says, of her current role in Kingfisher, an effervescant romantic comedy which she first appeared in several years ago.

"It didn't quite work out as I thought, last time," reflects Leach. "There was a certain misunderstanding of the nature of the piece, I think. The lighting was very dark, which wasn't quite right, as it's set in a garden. We have tried something different this time and, hopefully, the audience will like our interpretation. I think there's something for everyone to enjoy in it."

Kingfisher sees Cecil Warburton, a successful novelist, attempt to rekindle his relationship with the woman he loved 50 years ago, after her husband dies.

Leach's co-star, Francis Matthews, another stalwart of British acting, has appeared in more than 40 films and television dramas, most notably in the Hammer horror movies. It is, we suggest, a surprise the two have not worked together before.

"We worked together very briefly many years ago on a pilot for a television show," she says, "but nothing came of it. It's excellent to be working with him now. It's very much a conversation piece between two people who haven't met for a very long time talking about love, romance, life and relationships."
