She only released her debut album at the end of last year, but Lucie Silvas has been subtly doing her thing on the pop scene for nearly a decade.

The flowing-haired songstress is an established songwriter, having penned hits for popsters Gareth Gates, Rachel Stevens and Liberty X.

But don't let that put you off. Her solo material is aimed at the more mature and, dare we say it, sophisticated, audience and is favoured by the likes of Radio 2 and VH1. She has the vocal range of Christina Aguilera and the dainty feminity of Delta Goodrem.

And although she sits slap bang in the middle of the highway, you can't knock her talent.

You also have to respect the way she journeyed into the mainstream - instead of shaking her booty in front of Simon Cowell, she honed her craft as a backing singer from the age of 17, as well as becoming a jobbing writer (she recently found out that a song she wrote three years ago was number one in Denmark!)

After several false starts as a solo artist (one label tried to market her as a saucy R&B act - wrong move), Lucie was signed to Mercury Records and was finally able to sing her material herself.

On her debut album Breathe In, she wrote all but one track. The album went platinum and spawned two top ten hits, What You're Made Of and Breathe In.

The piano-driven, blues and gospel-influenced record won over Coldplay's Chris Martin, Burt Bacharach, Lionel Richie and the ultimate diva, Elton John.

Lucie aims to keep things minimal and simple - some piano here, a touch of guitar there, light percussion and a smattering of strings.

"My album is about true things that have happened, either to me, or to my friends or family," she says.

"People say to me that I'm very honest on Breathe In."

Lucie is only 25 but she had a head-start, having started playing the piano at the age of five. She was writing songs at ten.

"When everyone at school was listening to Bros, I was listening to gospel music, Stevie Wonder, Nat King Cole and The Carpenters," she says. "Especially The Carpenters - Karen's voice was just amazing."

Her ambitions to become as credible as her influences might just be realised. This is Lucie's second headline UK tour this year and in the summer she played the at the Brecon Jazz and V Festivals. She's done showcases all over the world, most recently for L.A. Reid (of Mariah Carey fame) in New York.

Breathe In, although nothing ground-breaking, is her own record and something she is rightfully proud of. "I've finally worked out what being Lucie Silvas is,"

she says. "It's taken awhile to get there, but now I can say: 'This is me. This who I am.'"
