Rock star and actor Nick Cave wants to do a film in Hove before modern development "wrecks" its Regency features.

Speaking at the screening of the The Proposition, which he has written, Mr Cave, who lives in Hove, said: "I'm really interested in filming in Hove and filming a lot of the Regency buildings before they are destroyed by those towers."

He was referring to the controversial structure designed by architect Frank Gehry planned for the King Alfred site on the seafront.

Mr Cave complained that the development was "really near my house" and asked to be quoted as "outraged of Hove".

More than 300 people were at The Duke of York's Playhouse in Preston Circus, Brighton, for the premier of The Proposition, a western set in 1880s Australia.

The film was written by Mr Cave and directed by fellow Australian John Hillcoat, who now lives in Brighton. It is due to be released in March 2006 but was shown as part of the CineCity Film Festival.

Mr Cave described The Proposition as "a romantic comedy that is neither romantic nor funny".

Tim Brown, one of the festival's directors, said the premiere had been a sell-out.

He said: "The response to the film was excellent and there was a question and answer session afterwards with Nick and John which was informative."
