It is strange such a sense of loss could be felt for someone who hadn't physically featured in my life.
However, periodically during the past 50 years, I have admired George Best's skills and defended his weaknesses.
During the turmoil of my teenage years, posters and scrapbooks of him gave me confidence and support.
Later in life, his existence gave my children some understanding of the many problems arising from excessive drinking and the value of good relationships and a secure home.
We each have our own failings and, unfortunately, many of us will never be given so many chances as George was. But I will continue to carry an organ donor card and appreciate his life's positive aspects.
So rest in peace, George, and thanks for being one of the strands in my life's tapestry.
