While everyone would have liked the results at Whitehawk Primary to have been better (The Argus, December 2), I pay tribute to the school's head and staff for their excellent work in what is still a deprived area, facing many challenging issues.
Brighton and Hove City Council and the Whitehawk community will be behind them in their efforts to raise results and attendance levels.
Work begins in the next few weeks on an innovative, child-focused and sustainable building for the Whitehawk Children's Centre, on the site of the old infants' school, where an event was held recently to celebrate the area's rich history and to look forward to the project.
Teams of professionals from organisations including the city council, eb4U and NHS trusts will work together to create a valuable resource for parents, under-fives and for Whitehawk and Manor Farm.
By giving young families a better start, through promoting parenting skills and providing a range of child and healthcare services on one site at the heart of the estate, the future will be brighter for children in Whitehawk in the years to come.
-Councillor Warren Morgan, East Brighton ward (Labour)
