I have read with interest and concern the articles about park-and-ride and the controversy over Patcham Court Farm (The Argus, November ).

On November 29, The Argus carried a full-page advertisement from Roger French, which said without park and ride, he wouldn't be able to run a reliable bus service.

As a regular bus user, I think the service is already reliable and something to be proud of.

However, even buses get stuck in the gridlock and a park-and-ride scheme would do little to improve matters.

What Roger French and his Go-Ahead Group should be looking at is an underground metro system, which many cities in Europe have adopted to solve traffic problems.

Various people, including Simon Fanshawe, have used phrases such as "brave new city" and "lack of vision".

The EU would probably assist with the funding for such a project, especially because it would be environmentally friendly.

A few years ago, The Argus ran a report on a company which said plans for an underground rail network from Newhaven to East Brighton and from Portslade to central Brighton were feasible.

Without such a system, the developments at the King Alfred site and Brighton Marina are doomed before they begin and they and any other large-scale developments would be environmental disasters waiting to happen.
