What do these developers think they are playing at (The Argus, December 7)?

The Beetham Organisation, which wants to build a 42-storey block at Brighton Station, and Berkeley Homes, which wants to build a 13-storey block on the old Caffyns site, at the southern end of Roman Road, Hove, are both appealing to the Government Inspectorate about plans which were unanimously refused by Brighton and Hove City Council's planning committee.

Berkeley Homes has since submitted a new set of plans for a still-too-high six-storey block of 71 flats. What part of no doesn't it understand?

These developments aren't wanted.

There isn't sufficient local infrastructure - dentists, schools, doctors - to support this high number of flats.

They are overbearing, inappropriate for the area, will cut out light and don't use sustainable resources. Not to mention, the increase in cars and pollution they will bring about.

Do we want to go back to the Sixties and have families living in high-rise flats?

These aren't the right places to bring up children. Studies have shown the adverse effects on families brought up in high-rise buildings.

I hope residents will oppose these developments. The Government needs to reject these developers' appeals out of hand and listen to local planners.
